Design Guidelines for Ordering Press Books in ROES
1. Color Correct your Images in Advance
When designing your own layouts for Press Books, you must color correct the images before creating your files. For more information on color correcting, view the Color Management Tutorial.
2. Design Using the Press Book Templates
For your press books to print all the way to the edge of the product, designs must include a bleed. The bleed allows the product to be trimmed to the final size without a margin around the edges.
When designing Press Books, Photo Covers and Dust Jackets, we recommend using our Press Book Templates. These Photoshop files are set up to the correct document size, and have guidelines marking bleeds and fold lines.
When ordering in ROES, “Safe Lines” are shown at 1/4” from the edge of the templates, which is 1/8" in from the final product size. All important design elements should be inside the “safe lines” to ensure that it will appear on the final product. Remember, this guide does not work both ways. Elements outside the “safe line” may still appear on the final product. Therefore, make sure that unwanted elements do not appear within the ROES template.
3. Submit Files using ROES
When ordering Press Books in ROES, it is important to follow these instructions.
- From the ROES Press Catalog, choose Hardbound Books, then the size of book you wish to order.
- From the Pages tab, order all pages first, using the Full Book Page or 1up Book Page layouts. Drag images into the layout and click "Add to Order."
- Order pages in the correct sequence.
- Do not use the crop or fit option. Layouts should be designed to the correct dimensions in Photoshop.
- You can order multiple pages at once. Select the images you would like to order from, using the Shift or Control key, and drag into the layout. Each page will automatically be ordered.
- Note: If you are using the 1up Book Page layout, first drag the background image in, and set the opacity. Then click the "Lock Image" button, before dragging multiple images into the primary node. If you wish to leave the background white, select the background node and click the "Lock Image" button.
- Remember that odd numbered book pages will be in the right, and even numbers on the left. There is a minimum of 20 pages per book, and we recommend ordering pages in even numbers, or there will be a blank page at the end of the book.
- Next click the Covers tab, and select the cover you wish to order. If you are ordering a Photo Cover, then drag the cover you created using the Photo Cover template into the layout. Click "Add to Order."
- You can add a Dust Jacket to any hardbound book. To order, click the Dust Jacket tab, select the layout, and drag the jacket you created using the Dust Jacket template into the layout. Click "Add to Order." You must order a cover, even if you choose to add a Dust Jacket.
- Once you have completed your order, carefully review before submitting. Verify that all pages are listed in the correct order. (You can drag and drop pages if they are not in the correct sequence.) Pages will print in the order they appear in Order Review.
- If you color corrected you own images, select "Studio Color Correct" on the Order Review page.
